Fresh Vietnamese Cuisine - 4900 Central Avenue

Since our family arrived in Charlotte in 1990, we have built a reputation for our fresh, authentic Vietnamese cuisine.

In 2004 our brother Cuong Duong opened Ben Thanh. Here we feature the famous cooking of our mother Ngan Nguyen. Many of the people who serve you and who work in our kitchen are brothers and sisters, wives and husbands. All of us are happy to offer you our hospitality. We will be glad to answer questions and help you choose from our large menu.

Our menu

Ben Thanh's soups, including the traditional Pho (pronounce Fuh), have won Creative Loafing''s "Best of Charlotte" award. Our menu features Vietnamese hot pots (mixtures of vegetables that may include meat, layered over flavored rice), stir-fried vegetable and meat dishes, noodle and rice dishes. We invite you to also enoy our traditional dark Vietnamese French coffee and avocado shakes, and grilled meats.

If you are vegetarian, you will find many delicious choices here. and many vegetarian selections.

Our flavors

Because of Vietnam's historical ties with France, many of our traditional dishes blend the flavors and cooking styles of other Asian cultures with a strong French influence. Pho, for example, is based on a French-style consommé. However, our dishes are often spiced with such Asian herbs as lemon grass, mint and coriander, as well as with our own flavorful fish sauce.

Most dishes are not spicy in the sense of being "hot" to American tastes, although hot peppers and fiery chili sauces may be served on the side. Our summer rolls -- unlike those from other Asian cultures -- are not fried. Instead, they are wrapped in a thin rice-paper noodle that has been briefly cooked in hot water. The wrapper is so transparent, you can see the fresh shrimp and herbs inside.
